matt good on the album:
"It's a record about redemption. My redemption. I used to think that I was miserable by nature. But since the demise of the band I've come to realize that that situation made me miserable more than anything. Given that, when it came to writing the record I discovered a wealth of inspiration that had been hidden from my view for a very long time and the discovery of that view is commented on and acts as a general theme. It's as if it's a thunderous force crashing down upon you that you can't escape so you just let it hit. As far as influences are concerned, well I spent a great deal of time listening to three records more than any others, though they really didn't influence the writing. I listened to them for mood more than anything and they just made me love the nuts and bolts of music again. They were Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, Empty Glass by Pete Townshend, and Spirit Of Eden by Talk Talk. Something old, something new, something remembered if you will."

When I set out to write this record I promised myself that if I was going to continue making records I would do it to satisfy the desire within myself to discover something that I hadn't yet. As a writer, as a person, etc. So as I wrote the record I confronted a lot of aspects of making music that I had never allowed myself to before. And in the end I really found myself writing short soundtracks to various thoughts and realizations rather than proper songs. I wouldn't say that I strive to make music that is less accessible, but rather have come to terms with learning to accept and embrace what inherently comes out of me. I can't say in the past I've allowed that to happen, and subsequently find myself with a record that I actually adore for a change. Of course I'll repeat all of this in countless interviews in the future, but I suppose the best way to put it would be - I went looking for a change in sound and found myself, in the end, with a change of spirit."
